Solo Show Workshop

From Your Life to the Stage: Crafting Solo Theatre

From story idea to standing ovation, a series of hour-long workshops dedicated to creating, marketing and performing your solo show. These workshops are currently presented digitally, but from 2022 onward can also be done in-person at theatres, festivals and schools.


  • Week 1

    Where to Start: exploring the elements of what makes a successful and compelling solo show, picking/honing a topic and learning how to begin writing.

  • Week 2

    Writing the Script: from the first draft to a finished script. Deciding what elements best serve the show, building a dramatic arc, revising and polishing. Dramaturgy and feedback.

  • Week 3

    Preparing the Show: Rehearsal process to tech script. Is a director necessary? Putting in sound and light cues. Choosing set, props and costumes. Creating a show budget.

  • Week 4

    Marketing and Performing: From poster design to music rights. Find a fit for your show. How to write a press release, arranging performances/bookings, designing a show flyer.



Melanie Gall is an internationally-acclaimed vocalist and music historian. She received her Masters degree from New York’s
Manhattan School of Music and has sung at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Royal Albert Hall. She has written and toured award-winning shows in over forty-seven countries, including sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival.
Melanie has taught music and acting classes around the world, from Canada to Sudan.

Shelby Bond is an award-winning performer and theater producer. He received an MFA from London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and also graduated from the Los Angeles Second City Conservatory. He has written twenty-eight plays, which won awards in three continents and received 5-star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival.Shelby is also a skilled educator, teaching improvisation and acting to students from China to Australia.
